 Q. Highlight the history of pharmacy profession.

  • for the first time in india a chemist shop was opened in 1811 by minister badge who came to india with east india company in calcutta 
  • Another form smith stanistreek started another chemist shop in 1821 and commercialise the manufacturing in 1918
  • "Bengal chemical and pharmaceutical works" a small factory was started in calcutta 1901 by Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy
  • In 1903 under the leadership of professor T. K, Gujjar small factory at parrel was started which lead to the development of other pharmaceutical unit OLYMPIC CHEMICAL WORKS PVT LMT at Baroda
  • This unit does not satisfied to full fill the requirement of public , therefore in those days most of the medicines were imported from abroad e.g. UK ,France ,Germany
  • Then the situation change with world war, cheaper drugs were imported from abroad ,therefore there were also increasing demand of indigenous drugs 
  • In those days OPM act -1878
  • Poison act -1919 and dangerous drugs act -1930 were in existence but this act was not comprehensive in prevention of diseases
  • Therefore as such there was no legal control on pharmacy profession at the begining of the century , therefore legignation to indian government appointed 
  • A drug inquiry committee under the chairmanship of R. N. Chopra in 1931 (DEC) or Chopra Committee
  • This committee was ask to make inquiry of solid matter and then to take recommendation of smooth control of manufacture , import, distribution, and sell of drugs 
  • Due to second world war in 1939 there were delay in introduction of legignation as per recommendation of DEC which was considered urgent need by indian govt 
  • Ultimately import of drug bill was introduced in in 1937 to control import of drugs 
  • The govt prefer to the bill to select drugs also to control and regulate manufacture , sell and distribution of drug in country
